A Toast to an Awesome Wetland An extensive fresh water body with unique geographical features to an extent of 1,397 ha is home to half of Sri Lanka’s fresh water fish and vertebrae species. An ancient tank system dating back to the 12th Century is a testimony of the early settlers.
Prince of Darkness- The untamed jungle (Wilpattu) is also the home to what, I believe, as Ceylon’s largest leopard population. As I stepped into her arches, she opens doors to the finest specimen of forest, scenery, closely guarded by her custodians, to pamper me with an experience of a lifetime.
Mundel Salt Lake Host for the Migratory Birds-Shore birds in their thousands converge on to this mineral enriched land to feast after a tedious and decisive journey from the Northern Hemisphere. “A nature’s spectacle for a birder’s delight”.
Sea Grass Beds and the elusive Dugong – The shallow waters of the West Coast is also the home to Ceylon’s extensive sea grass beds - a marine plant which balances the fragile aquatic Eco system and gives refuge to mammal species feared to become extinct in the future.
My Camp and Food – Set amidst the thorny scrub jungle, my “Kudarama” was hoisted on wooden stilts to give a very suttle interior, brining the warmth of homely comfort draped in the cradle of Mother Nature.
The assortment of dishes made by the village folks simply arouses the taste buds in me, prepared according to traditional recipes harnessing the nutritional values passed down to them by generations, is a delightful feast for any traveler. |

My last night at “Kudarama” made me wonder, as I gazed up to the star list sky with the entire camp bathed in moon light and adorned by silvery waters and shadowy trees, whether this was heaven on earth! |
